The Terracotta Army is part of a mausoleum which was built in 210 BC for Qín Shihuángdì, the Emperor at that time. Since 1987 the army has been listed as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage.
The army is composed of 7278 soldiers who are all life-size and have been lovingly replicated in great detail. The various military ranks are recognisable due to varying uniforms and each soldier has individual facial features. Also the details in equipment vary from figure to figure. Already during construction the burnt clay was treated with a chromium salt solution in order to preserve it – and mind you, this was more than 2000 years ago.
