At about 443 metres in height, the Empire State Building in New York was the highest building worldwide up until 1972.
Since the tragic chain of events on September 11th 2001 and up until the construction of the One World Trade Centre it was once again the highest building in the Big Apple. At a record-breaking pace, the skyscraper in Art Deco construction style was practically built over night.
The construction work started in January 1930 and the steel giant was already opened by the then US-President Herbert Hoover on May 1st 1931. Approximately 60'000 tons of steel were used.

Nowadays, on special occasions, the top of the Empire State Building is specially lit up. For example, on St. Patrick's Day it shines green, on Halloween orange and on US-holidays it shines red-white and blue.
