The baroque Palace of Versailles which is located in a suburb of Paris has belonged to the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage since 1979 and is considered one of the highlights of european castle architecture.
Originally, the palace was only designed for King Louis XIII as a hunting residence. Not until 1661 was it reconstructed and enlarged in several stages by King Louis XIV, the famous "Roi Soleil". Up until the outbreak of the French Revolution the Palace of Versailles was the official residence of the royal family. Therefore it was the cultural and political centre in France during the 17th century. It also accommodated a court of several thousand people.
Today the castle is one of the biggest tourist attractions in France and is visited by several million visitors annually.
