Reverse Design
Lance Ascalon:
The gilded image of the legendary lance Ascalon shares the coin reverse with the relief depiction of Saint George killing the dragon. One of the most venerated saints in the Anglican Church, Eastern and Oriental Orthodox Churches and the Eastern Catholic Churches, Saint George has been immortalized in the legend of Saint George and the Dragon. According to it, he slew the dragon with his lance Ascalon named after the city of Ashkelon in Israel. The inscriptions on the reverse include the name of the coin and its face value.
Sword Excalibur:
The gilded image of the legendary sword Excalibur shares the coin reverse with the relief depiction of King Arthur holding it. Legend has it that Arthur of Camelot turned out to be the true king of England when he pulled out a sword that was embedded into a large stone. According to another version, Arthur and Merlin rode to a lake where they saw an arm clothed in white samite, rising from the water and holding a sword. Excalibur was believed to possess magical powers: the scabbard protected the owner from being mortily wounded while the sword itself was supposed to be unbreakable. The inscriptions on the reverse include the name of the coin and its face value.
Bow of Hercules:
The gilded image of the legendary bow shares the coin reverse with the relief depiction of Hercules shooting it. Known as the strongest of all mortals, Hercules was the last mortal son of Zeus. This man of immeasurable strength possessed the bow that shot arrows like no other, for the latter were sure to cause wounds that couldn’t be healed. Each arrow was individually dipped in the poisonous blood of the great Lernaean Hydra. The inscriptions on the reverse include the name of the coin and its face value.
Obverse Design
The portrait of Her Majesty Elizabeth II is traditionally placed on the obverse of the coin. It is surrounded by the legends denoting the Queen’s name, the face value of the coin, the name of the issuing country and the year of mintage.
