Karol Wojtyla, who was born in Poland in 1920, led an eventful life. He worked in a stone quarry during the Second World War to avoid deportation to Germany. He had to partially work on his theology studies underground. In 1978, after several posts in the Church and as the first non-Italian since 1523, he was elected pope John Paul II. Although he was critically injured in an attack in 1981 he remained in office until his death in 2005. He was canonised by Pope Francis in 2014.
Reverse Design
The reverse depicts the Holy Pope in prayer. The image is beautifully designed and finely engraved into the coin. You will also fin the inscriptions "In Memory of the Holy Pope" and "2005 - 2015" on this side of the coin.
Obverse Design
Each coin features the Tanzania coat of arms, as well as the denomination "1500 Shillings" on the coin.
