Marilyn Monroe (1926–1962) was born Norma Jeane Mortenson, but baptized Norma Jeane Baker. This quintessentially American actress and model graced the silver screen with her luminous beauty.
Considered the very definition of a blond bombshell, Monroe began a career as a model, which led to her first film contract in 1946. Her early film appearances were minor, but her performances in The Asphalt Jungle and All About Eve (both 1950) were well received. By 1953, Monroe had progressed to the leading role in such films as Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953), with Jane Russell), How to Marry a Millionaire (1953, with Betty Grable and Lauren Bacall) and The Seven Year Itch (1955).
Monroe’s dramatic performance in Bus Stop (1956) was hailed by critics, for which she received a Golden Globe nomination. She received a BAFTA award for The Prince and The Showgirl (1957) and received a Golden Globe Award for her performance in Some Like It Hot (1959).
Obverse
A photographic portrait of Marilyn Monroe is set against a background of a 35 mm film strip set with stars (in the shape of the Southern Cross). The legend MARILYN MONROE in red is a facsimile of the screen goddess' signature. The Perth Mint's "P" mint mark is judiciously placed at the 7 o'clock position.
Reverse
A frosted cameo portrait of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II of England, in crowned profile facing right. This portrait, featuring Her Majesty wearing a tiara and pearl earrings, was executed by the sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley. The legend QUEEN ELIZABETH II and denomination also appear.
