Piz Palü, located in the border region between the Swiss canton Grisons and the Italian province Sondrio, rises to a respectable altitude of 3900 m. It owes its name to the Alp Palü which consisted of marshy grasslands (lat. palus = marsh). The Englishman Kenelm Edward Digby and his mountain guide Peter Jenny succeeded in the first documented ascent to the peak in 1866. The well-known film by Leni Riefenstahl “Die weisse Hölle vom Piz Palü“ of 1929 pays him homage in an impressive style.
