The highest mountain in the USA outside Alaska is Mount Whitney at 4421 m. It is situated in California and is part of the Sierra Nevada. In 1873 three fishermen from Lone Pine, California succeeded in the first ascent. Whether they did so in search of a big catch is doubtful.
