The saltwater crocodile (lat. crocodylus porosus), who is often called „Saltie“, is the largest living crocodile to this day. Fully-grown creatures reach an average body-length of five meters and in rare cases they even surpas six. They mainly feed on fish and tortoises; however mammals and birds of all kinds are among their prey.
It is possible for saltwater crocodiles to reach 100 years of age. With their exceptional width and a pair of ridges which run from the eye orbits along the centre of the snout, they distinguish themselves visibly from other crocodile species.
Due to the fact that the saltwater crocodile claims fixed territories, the juveniles are always in search of new environments. Thus it is not surprising that the saltwater crocodile’s habitat is very large and reaches from East Indies to South-East Asia and Australia. This also encloses the whole Pacific Island World, including Palau.
