About 80 buildings such as churches, chapels and windmills in Karelian wooden architecture are situated on the remote Island Kizhi on Lake Onega in Russia. The most impressive church on the island is the 35 m high Church of the Transfiguration which can be seen from afar due to its striking silvery domes. It is a part of the open-air museum which attracts thousands of tourists from all over the world annually.
It is said that the legendary builder Nestor claimed, “There has never been and will never be another church to match it!“, after the church was erected in 1714. And sure enough, the building is the only preserved wooden church in Russia today.
Carpentered solely in aspen- and pinewood, not a single nail was used to hold the church together. The 22 domes are comprised of 30’000 single plates and glisten either in silver of crimson, depending on the time of day.
Next to the Church of Transfiguration, which was designed for summer, stands the smaller heated Church of the Intercession which only has ten domes. Also referred to as „Melody of wood“, the three buildings with their in total 33 domes, represent the years which Jesus Christ was on earth.
