The St. Peter's Basilica seats 20'000 people and is the centre of the Vatican. It was built as a burial church for Peter the Apostle.
Financed by the so-called "Peter's penny" and the sale of indulgences the foundation stone of today's St. Peter's Basilica was laid on April 18th, 1506. The construction proceeded very sluggishly and experienced many project changes. Only on November 18th 1626 was Pope Urban VIII able to consecrate it. This most certainly did not have a detrimental effect on the beauty of St. Peter's Basilica and its famous dome. Famous artists such as Bramante, Raffael and Michelangelo also worked on St. Peter's Basilica.
