The first coin in this new series features the Winter Palace - the official residence of Russian Tsars and present day Hermitage Museum that is located in the city of St. Petersburg.
The obverse displays a small effigy of Her Majesty Elizabeth II surrounded by the following inscriptions: the Queen’s name, the issuing country and year. In the background, there is a high relief image of the interior of the Winter Palace struck in impressive detail. A red Swarovski crystal gives the coin a special look.
The reverse features the Winter Palace façade decorated with the same deep red crystal insert as on the obverse. Magnificently located on the bank of the Neva River, this Baroque-style palace is the place where almost all the Romanovs starting from Catherine the Great resided. It was built between 1754 and 1762 for Empress Elizabeth, the daughter of Peter the Great
