Karl Brullov (1799-1852), Russian painter, born in St. Petersburg, lived in Russia and Italy. Key figure of Russian neoclassicism and romanticism, known for his portraits, genre and historical paintings. One of his best-known work, "The Last Day of Pompeii" (1830-1833) created a sensation in Italy and established Brullov as one of the finest European painters of his days. From technological point of view the reverse of the coin is a beautiful example of a coloured design printed on a very high relief.
