Andy Warhol was one of the leading figures of the visual art movement known as "pop art". He was famous for his work as a painter, filmmaker, author, and his highly diverse social circle including Hollywood celebrities, intellectuals and the wealthy. He was an advocate of "Art Business" and often wrote about viewing art as a means to make money. Which makes the creation of Gold & Silver coins commemorating his life and art all the more poignant. Featuring Andy's famous self portrait, done in 1964, this gold coin is a unique masterpiece in itself.
Obverse
Andy Warhol's famous interpretation of the United States Dollar Sign, rendered in authentic pop art style. There are no legends on this side, to enhance the artistic value of the work. The date of issue is indicated.
Reverse
A multiple view, changing depiction of Andy Warhol's famous Self-Portrait (1964), superimposed on his famous quote, "Making money is art." Below the portrait is a facsimile of Warhol's signature and the dates of his birth and death, 1928-1987. The denomination and RF, for République Française ("The French Republic") are also indicated.
Packaging
This excruciatingly rare coin is encapsulated and presented in an exclusive case. Its structure in folded sheet metal reminds us of the commercial means of the silkscreen technique that was emblematic of Andy Warhol's artworks created at his studio called the Factory. The predominant color of black alludes to the silk-screen printing of the artist who used it to reinforce contrasts and highlight the bright hues of his work. The Dollar Sign and the artist's self-portrait are presented both on the coin and on the case. An individually numbered certificate of authenticity is included.
