The Muses - 12 Coin Set
The nine goddesses of the arts and sciences, who inspired the ancient Greeks, and countless literary geniuses since, find their stories told upon exceptionally beautiful silver coins. With original designs inspired by examples of figurative pottery, The Muses is a first opportunity for collectors to uniquely experience this important ancient art. Along with three other deities directly related to these legendary sisters of song, each Muse is portrayed in stunning low relief made extraordinary by deftly applied polished and frosted finishes.

Mnemosyne is the mother, by Zeus, of the nine Muses. To the ancients, she was the personification of memory.

Calliope, whose name means beautiful voice, is the muse of epic poetry. She is depicted with a scroll and stylus, and sometimes as wearing a gold crown.

Orpheus was the son of Calliope and, therefore, a demigod. His exceptional musical talent made him the most famous musician of Greek legend.

Clio, who was known as the proclaimer, is the muse of history. It was Clio who inspired the songs that tell of glorious actions.

Erato, whose name means desired or lovely, is the muse of lyric poetry, particularly romantic or erotic poetry.

Euterpe, whose name means rejoice, is the muse of music. Euterpe is credited with inventing the double-flute and was the patroness of flute-players.

Melpomene is the muse of tragedy. Melpomene inspired the Greek dramatic tragedies that would become the foundation of the cultural identity of Western civilization.

Polyhymnia, whose name means many songs, is the muse of sacred poetry. She encourages those whose works deal with immortal
fame.

Terpsichore, whose name means whirling, is the muse of dance. She was the patroness of choral dance and the dramatic chorus.

Thalia, whose name means festive, is the muse of comedy. Thalia inspired comedy, which to the Greeks was serious art, often in the form of political satire that influenced public opinion.

Urania, whose name means heavenly, is the beautiful muse of astronomy, or more accurate to the ancient world, the science of astrology.

Apollo was the teacher, leader and primary companion of the Muses. He was known as the god of light, reason, music, poetry, dance, truth, prophecy, healing, archery, and many other things.
