The Government of Ascension Island have launched (30 May) one of the largest tributes to date for the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. This coin is made utilizing 60 ounces of Fine Silver and 60 stunning faceted diamonds, totaling 1 carat in weight. The diamonds have been set into the Crown in the design of the profile portrait of Her Majesty. The crown on the coin has also been gold-plated to show off these diamonds to their full effect, a fitting tribute for Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee.
Struck by and hand-crafted at the Pobjoy Mint in the United Kingdom, the coin has a face value of 60 crowns (1 crown = £0.25). The obverse of each coin features a unique double effigy of Her Majesty, the first is a portrait of The Queen as she appears on current coins, while the other is a portrait of Her Majesty as she appeared on coins at the beginning of her Reign.
Struck to proof quality and also using a high relief process, the coin has a weight of 1,866.2 grams and a diameter of 130 mm. The authorized mintage for this coin is set at 60 examples. The coin is housed in a polished hardwood presentation case along with numbered certificate of authenticity.
