This captivating, unique silver coin of the Masterpieces of Art series has been struck as a tribute to a masterpiece by Italian landscape painter Giovanni Antonio Canal, better known as Canaletto. Canaletto's technique had the traditional Venetian hallmarks of luminous light and glowing color, to which he added a Dutch-influenced attention to clear and accurate detail.
An effigy of Queen Elizabeth II is represented on the obverse of the silver coin. There are also the inscriptions indicating the name of the Queen, the coin’s face value and the name of the issuing country.
Shown on the reverse of the coin is the reproduction of the picture Return of the Bucentoro to the Molo on Ascension Day, showing traditional Venetian ceremony from a series of 14 views of the Grand Canal painted by Canaletto and engraved by Antonio Visentini. The historical power of the Venetian Republic was dependent upon its mastery of the sea, both for trading and military purposes. The image is decorated with incredible Swarovski crystals. The upper part of the reverse includes the inscription of the series name.
