Located 2,400 kilometres (1,500 miles) northeast of New Zealand in the midst of the vast Pacific Ocean, is the island paradise that is Niue. With a land area of 269 square kilometres (100 square miles), Niue is both one of the world’s largest raised coral atolls and one of the smallest countries on earth.
The Niue Blue Butterfly (Nacaduba Niueensis) is the only endemic butterfly species found on this remote Pacific island. It was discovered by Australian Museum Research Associate, Mr. Rob Lachlan in 2012. As there are only a small number of endemic plant and animal species, this butterfly has particular importance to the people of Niue.

Reverse:
This face of the coin features both colour and relief engraved depictions of the Niue Blue Butterfly. These are set against a contrasting polished and matte background design engraved with the butterfly species Latin name.
